The chess pieces are hand-carved and hand-polished in brass.
Inspired by the Staunton style, their design has been reworked, with the base of the pieces rounded to extend along their full length and reworked in height.
Large in size with a king height of 9.9 cm, they are very well weighted and feature felt under their base. Delightful to handle, they are among the finest brass chess pieces we offer.
The chess board accompanying this brass Staunton chess set is made from elm and briar wood, its finish is impeccable. The colour of the woods and the glossy finish bring out the chess pieces all the more.
A chess set with a classic Staunton style, slightly reworked to bring a more contemporary touch. Crafted by an artisan specialising in making chess sets and chess boards in wood and metal for years, you will be surprised by the result.
If you choose to give this set as a gift, you can select the “engraved plate” option and have a message or date engraved for a truly unique present!
A beautiful chess set rests on a simple balance: pieces well proportioned to the size of the squares. To choose a harmonious board, the most reliable guide is the diameter of the king's base.
Key guideline: ideally, the king's base takes up about 75% of the square.
| King height | King base diameter | Square size |
|---|---|---|
| 7,3 à 7,6 cm | 3,8 cm | 4,7 à 5,1 cm |
| 9,5 à 9,8 cm | 4,4 cm | 5,7 à 6 cm |
| 10,1 cm | 4,1 à 4,7 cm | 6 cm |
| 11,2 cm | 5 cm | 6,3 cm |
| 12,7 cm et plus | 4,4 cm | 6,3 à 7 cm |
| King base diameter | Square size |
|---|---|
| 2 à 2,4 cm | 2,8 à 3,5 cm |
| 2,5 à 2,9 cm | 3,5 à 4 cm |
| 3 à 3,4 cm | 4,3 à 5 cm |
| 3,5 à 3,9 cm | 4,8 à 6,2 cm |
| 4 à 4,5 cm | 6 à 8 cm |
A board that is too small can hamper moves and make the set look cluttered. À l’inverse, a board that is too large can break the harmony of the whole. The right size brings both playing comfort and elegance.

I'm not a big fan of buying this kind of product online, I like to see it before buying. But honestly nowadays it's become almost impossible to find a nice traditional chess set in shops. So I ordered a wooden model online and I'm really pleased with my purchase. The set is very pretty, the pieces are beautiful and it looks great in the living room. We play regularly with my husband and the rest of the time it's almost like decoration. The only small complaint I could make is that there isn't a huge choice of storage boxes when you have pieces that aren't Staunton. Otherwise nothing to say, very satisfied.
Product matches the photo, no nasty surprises, well protected and sent on time. Thank you.
Merci.
I ordered a complete chess set and unfortunately the black king arrived broken, despite the parcel being very well packaged. I sent an email to customer service with a photo of the broken piece. They replied quickly and sent me a new king free of charge. The new piece arrived a few days later, very well protected and this time no issues at all. It can happen that a piece breaks during transport, even when well packaged. What matters most is the seller's reaction when there's a problem. And honestly, nothing to fault, it was simple and quick. Very satisfied with the after-sales service from Le Palais des Échecs.
Lots (too many... ? ^-'^) of models, I had a hard time making my choice but by contacting them by email I got several personalised suggestions that really helped a lot. So overall a positive review of the service from Le Palais des Echecs. One small downside, a payment in instalments option would be welcome. Kind regards.
✓ Avis VérifiésBeaucoup (trop... ? Bien cordialement.

I ordered a very large folding chess set on the gladiator theme in mid-August, the figures are well made and what's handy is that you can store them inside the board which folds up.
