The Purist's Choice
Ebony, rosewood, boxwood, sheesham: Staunton pieces crafted from the finest woods
Our luxury wood chess pieces are the reference choice for the discerning player. Hand-turned from noble timbers — ebony, rosewood, boxwood, sheesham — they respect the proportions of the Staunton style, the world standard recognised by FIDE. The finish on our wooden chess sets is impeccable: felt base, lead weighting, satin varnish and a precisely carved knight's crown.
Our timbers
Ebony
The king of dark woods: dense, heavy, with an ultra-fine grain. Ebony offers a striking contrast with boxwood and is the standard for elite international tournaments.
ViewRosewood
A reddish-brown hue with spectacular grain patterns. Rosewood is prized for its natural beauty, density and silky feel.
ViewBoxwood
The traditional companion to ebony and rosewood. A pale yellow wood with a tight grain, perfect for the white pieces. European boxwood has been the Staunton standard since 1849.
ViewSheesham
An affordable alternative to rosewood, sheesham (Indian rosewood) offers warm tones and good density. Excellent value for a first luxury wood chess set.
ViewExpert tip: For a club or competition set, look for a king of 90-98 mm in ebony and lead-weighted boxwood. For family use or as a gift, a king of 80-90 mm in rosewood and boxwood offers the best balance of size and price. Pair your pieces with a luxury wood chess board in matching tones.
Complete your set
Our luxury wood pieces pair beautifully with our luxury wood chess boards (walnut/maple, ebony/maple). For a set already matched, browse our complete chess sets. For a different style, explore our metal chess pieces or our carved Alpine pieces.
