The Lewis chessmen are the most famous chess pieces in the world. Discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis (Scotland), these 93 pieces carved from walrus ivory in the 12th century captivate with their expressive faces: pensive kings, perplexed queens with hand on cheek, mitred bishops and berserkers biting their shields. Our Isle of Lewis chess sets are faithful reproductions of the originals displayed at the British Museum.
