Chess Elo Rating: Explanation, Levels, Calculation & Rankings

The Elo rating is the universal system that measures a chess player’s strength. Invented in 1960 by Hungarian-American physicist Arpad Elo, it assigns a number to each player: the higher the number, the stronger the player. Here’s how it works, how it’s calculated, and how to increase it.

The Elo system explained simply

What is Elo in chess? It’s a number (typically between 800 and 2900) that represents your playing level. A beginner starts around 800-1000. A club player is between 1400 and 1800. A grandmaster exceeds 2500. The absolute record is held by Magnus Carlsen at 2882 points.

The principle is simple: when you beat a higher-rated player, you gain a lot of points. When you lose to a lower-rated player, you lose a lot of points. Gains and losses are calculated mathematically to reflect the expected probability of the result.

How is the Elo rating calculated?

The Elo formula is based on a probability calculation. Before each game, the system estimates each player’s probability of winning based on the rating difference. After the game, points are adjusted:

📈 Win against a stronger player

You gain a lot of points (15-30+). The system “rewards” the unexpected performance. It’s the fastest way to raise your Elo rating.

📉 Loss against a weaker player

You lose a lot of points (15-30+). The system “penalises” the underperformance. That’s why strong players avoid underestimating their opponents.

📄 Win against a similarly rated player

You gain an average number of points (~10-15). This is the most common scenario, and progress is slow but steady.

📊 Draw

If you draw against a higher-rated player, you gain a few points. Against a lower-rated player, you lose a few. The draw “rewards” the weaker player.

Calculating your Elo: the exact formula is New Elo = Old Elo + K x (Actual score – Expected score), where K is a coefficient (typically 20-40 for regular players, 10 for 2400+). The expected score depends on the rating difference between the two players. Online platforms (Chess.com, Lichess) calculate your Elo automatically after each game.

The world chess ranking is published each month by FIDE (the International Chess Federation). In 2026, the world top 5 is:
