The Lewis chessmen are the most famous chess pieces in the world. Discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis (Scotland), these 93 pieces, carved from walrus ivory in the 12th century, fascinate with their expressive faces: pensive kings, bewildered queens with a hand to the cheek, mitred bishops and berserkers biting their shields.
