The Most Prestigious Chess Tables: Exceptional Chess Board Furniture

Les plus prestigieuses tables d'échecs

A chess table is far more than a simple playing surface: it’s a characterful piece of furniture that combines craftsmanship, elegance and functionality. From antique tables in solid walnut to modern models with storage drawers, discover everything you need to know to choose the ideal chess table.

What makes a chess table prestigious?

A quality chess table is distinguished by three criteria: the nobility of the wood, the precision of the marquetry and the cleverness of the design. The finest tables feature a chess board inlaid into the tabletop (rather than simply printed), drawers for storing the pieces, and a height designed for comfortable play.

Types of chess tables

Table with drawers

The most practical model. Two side drawers allow you to store the pieces after the game. The top is reversible on some models: a chess board on one side, a smooth surface on the other, so the table can be used as an occasional piece.

Antique-style table

Inspired by the 18th and 19th centuries, these antique-style chess tables feature curved legs, mouldings and aged finishes. They evoke the aristocratic drawing rooms where chess was a way of life for the elite. Ideal for a classic interior or a study.

Round or octagonal table

Less common but very elegant, these tables offer a distinctive look. The chess board is set into the centre and surrounded by a rim for placing captured pieces. Perfect as an occasional table in a living room.

Monumental table

Large marquetry tables with bronze or pietra dura (inlaid stone) tops are works of art. Found in palaces, prestigious chess clubs and private collections. Some antique tables fetch prices of several thousand euros at sale.

60 x 60 cm65-70 cm~6 cmComfortable play, standard

Golden rule: The size of the chess board’s squares should be proportionate to the size of the pieces. The base diameter of the king should occupy around 75% of the square. To find out more about setting up your table, see our guide 8 things to know before buying a chess table.

The charm of vintage

Vintage chess tables and vintage chess boards are highly sought after by collectors. A table from the 1950s-1970s, in walnut or mahogany, with its natural patina and marks of age, tells a story. You’ll find these pieces at flea markets, auctions and specialist antique dealers. If you prefer something new with a retro style, our antique-style tables faithfully reproduce the aesthetic of times gone by.
