The golden rule: the king/square ratio

The most important criterion for choosing a chess board is the ratio between the king’s base and the square size. FIDE recommends that the king’s base occupy around 75% of the square’s diagonal, which is roughly 78% of the square’s side.

Practical formula: King base diameter = Square side × 0.75 (±10%). Example: if your king has a base of 4.5 cm, your squares should measure around 5.5 to 6 cm. A board that’s too large makes the pieces look “lost”; a board that’s too small creates a cramped, cluttered look.
