Javokhir Sindarov won the Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown 2026, held from 27 to 29 October at the Saint Louis Chess Club. It was his last competitive outing before the biggest match of his career: the world title clash against reigning champion Gukesh Dommaraju, set to begin in Geneva on 24 November.
The essentials
• Sindarov finished first with 20.5 points, ahead of Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu (19), Fabiano Caruana (16.5) and Hikaru Nakamura (12).
• The format gave increasing value to wins by day: 1 point on Tuesday, 2 on Wednesday, 3 on Thursday.
• Sindarov pocketed around $168,000 from a total prize fund of $425,000.
• It was the Uzbek’s last tournament before his world championship match against Gukesh.
A dramatic swing on the final day
The event did not follow a straightforward path. After day one, Hikaru Nakamura led with 4 points out of 6, ahead of Sindarov (3.5), Caruana (2.5) and Praggnanandhaa (2). The picture changed on day two, when Praggnanandhaa surged into the lead with a 1.5-point cushion after three straight wins, including victories over Nakamura and Caruana, while Sindarov and Caruana shared second place.
Everything was decided on the final day, when wins carried the most weight. According to organisers, Sindarov notched three wins and three draws, adding 12 points to his tally and overtaking Praggnanandhaa at the wire.
The game of the tournament
Among all the games played, Sindarov’s encounter with Nakamura was named game of the tournament. In a King’s Indian Defence, the Uzbek grandmaster sacrificed a bishop and then two exchanges to secure the win. “The game was one of the best King’s Indian games I’ve ever played in my life,” Sindarov said.
Praggnanandhaa undone by a costly slip
Praggnanandhaa’s title hopes unravelled after a mistake in the final against Caruana, according to ChessBase. The American trapped his Indian rival’s queen, a turning point that proved costly for the young star in the race for first place.
Eyes on Geneva
For Sindarov, the Saint Louis title caps off his competitive preparation ahead of the year’s biggest occasion: the world championship match against Gukesh Dommaraju, which opens in Geneva with the first game scheduled for 24 November. The Uzbek, who had already secured his spot in the match by winning the Candidates Tournament earlier in the year, heads to Geneva with renewed confidence and a $168,000 cheque in hand.
