Size Guide (Pieces & Boards)

Matching Guide

Choosing the right board size

A beautiful chess set rests on a simple balance: pieces well proportioned to the size of the squares. To choose a harmonious board, the most reliable guide is the diameter of the king's base.

Key guideline: ideally, the king's base takes up about 75% of the square.

Traditional wooden chess sets

King height	King base diameter	Square size
7,3 à 7,6 cm	3,8 cm	4,7 à 5,1 cm
9,5 à 9,8 cm	4,4 cm	5,7 à 6 cm
10,1 cm	4,1 à 4,7 cm	6 cm
11,2 cm	5 cm	6,3 cm
12,7 cm et plus	4,4 cm	6,3 à 7 cm

Metal, resin, pewter, brass or themed sets

King base diameter	Square size
2 à 2,4 cm	2,8 à 3,5 cm
2,5 à 2,9 cm	3,5 à 4 cm
3 à 3,4 cm	4,3 à 5 cm
3,5 à 3,9 cm	4,8 à 6,2 cm
4 à 4,5 cm	6 à 8 cm

A board that is too small can hamper moves and make the set look cluttered. À l’inverse, a board that is too large can break the harmony of the whole. The right size brings both playing comfort and elegance.
