Buying a luxury chess set

Not all chess sets are created equal, and the chess board has never been merely a surface on which to move your pieces. A true work of art, inspired by a master carpenter, a skilled cabinetmaker or a gilding craftsman, the board is an elegant piece in its own right. Throughout their long history, the chess board and pieces have seen a parade of materials: wooden chess boards with ebony pieces, marble chess boards and ivory-style pieces, onyx boards with gilded pieces… Today, elite competitions require a wooden board, while less prestigious events may make do with a plastic or cardboard chess set.

Beyond the game itself, chess and board-game enthusiasts alike will be looking for aesthetics, atmosphere and a touch of decorative brilliance. Why not treat yourself to an onyx board inlaid with gold and silver, paired with solid bronze pieces reminiscent of the Middle Ages? Or perhaps you’d prefer a hand-crafted board with marble inlays, accompanied by grandiose XXL solid bronze pieces for a Carolingian feel? The prestigious brands that Le Palais des Echecs has chosen for you will reward you with exceptional chess sets, beautifully designed complete sets, chess boards in fine woods and elegant chess accessories.

The quintessence of luxury, a chess board is often the result of masterful craftsmanship, embellished with fine metalwork and faithful to the standards of the Staunton style. Inlaid with precious stones or metals, stamped with a serial number to reinforce their rarity and exclusivity, and finished for a truly unique feel, the pieces of your luxury chess set will enhance your interior and bring time to a standstill during a game.

Buying a wooden chess board: timeless pleasure

Your passion for chess is heightened tenfold when you set your pieces on a beautiful rosewood chess board. This noble, timeless material is also prized for other board games, backgammon, poker sets, darts, Chinese checkers, billiards, skittles, bridge, other classic games, as well as figurines, luxury puzzles, construction games and traditional brain-teaser games.

A wooden chess set is at once elegant, dignified and practical. A mahogany chess board will accompany you for family games, for introducing your children to this game of strategy in its various forms, or for testing yourself against the champions of your region. Are you drawn to the majesty of a wooden case, a slate chess board and lacquered wooden pieces? Le Palais des Echecs offers exceptional-quality sets to collect, with a wide choice of natural woods:

• European maple chess board;
• Beechwood chess sets;
• Poplar wood chess sets;
• Birch wood chess sets;
• Black walnut chess board;
• Mahogany chess board;
• Rosewood chess set;
• Macassar chess board;
• A selection of ebony sets;
• Teak chess board;
• Elm wood chess set…

Do you already have some chess pieces and are looking for a wooden board to match? Start by calculating the base diameter of your king, adding a quarter to obtain the minimum size of the squares on your wooden chess board. For example, for a king with an 8 cm base, you’ll need a board with squares of at least 10 cm (8 + 8/4).

The finish of your chess set

Le Palais des Echecs spares you this consideration. Above all, we are passionate about beautiful games, and the elegance of the board is a criterion on which no compromise is possible. At once strategic, intellectual, logical and entertaining, a chess set worthy of the name is also beautiful and refined, whether rustic or futuristic, understated or flamboyant, modern or historical. Between the 3rd and 6th centuries, one had to commission a wooden board (or more precisely, a Shatranj board) from a carpenter simply to enjoy moving pieces across it. In those days, the finish could be left wanting. Today, you’re entitled to demand a set worthy of your aspirations. A discerning eye knows how to spot the right board. Striking, it dazzles your opponents and gives you the edge, just like Kasparov. It’s a masterstroke. It’s a board that alone justifies the beauty of the game. Chess is an art, and Le Palais des Echecs strives to reflect this philosophy every day. That’s why the finish of the sets we offer is impeccable.

The art of clean lines, a sense of proportion and space, attention to detail and the purity of materials leave no room for approximation. From anodised aluminium to 24-carat gold, from chrome-plated silver to ruthenium, your chess boards are the fruit of boundless creativity.
