Chess: are women really less talented, or victims of prejudice?

The question of women’s chess ability was raised in 2015 when champion Nigel Short made a controversial statement, suggesting that women were naturally less gifted at chess due to the structure of their brains. This claim provoked strong reactions, but it also highlighted a troubling reality: men dominate the world chess rankings.

Misleading Statistics

It’s undeniable that men tend to achieve better results than women in chess competitions. The FIDE rankings include only one woman, Hou Yifan, among the top hundred players. But is this really an indication of women’s intrinsic ability?

The Real Cause of the Disparities

A study conducted in 2008 by Professor Merima Bialica examined the performances of 120,000 chess players in Germany. Although a performance gap between the sexes was observed, it was mainly attributed to the fact that far more men played chess than women. With a larger pool of players, the likelihood of finding exceptional talent is higher.

The Psychological Effect

David Smerdon, a psychologist and chess grandmaster, found that women tended to underperform when playing against men, compared to when they played against other women of similar standard. This suggests that prejudice and expectations can have a real impact on performance.

The Influence of Pop Culture

The series “The Queen’s Gambit” led to a significant rise in the number of women joining chess clubs. Although the series was criticised for its glamorous portrayal of its main character, Beth Harmon, it nonetheless inspired many women to take up the game.

Women are not intrinsically less talented at chess. The disparities observed are more the result of societal prejudice and a lack of female representation. As more and more women become involved in the world of chess, we are likely to see a shift in perceptions and, hopefully, in performance too.
