Learning to play against the clock
This set brings together a board, pieces and a clock for two players. DGT presents it as the set for players ready to move on to the next stage, with the clock adding extra energy to games. The bonus adds time before each move, on top of the starting time.
The DGT 1002 clock
The DGT 1002 is a single-period clock, with either a countdown or a count-up. Both players start with the same time, set using the buttons on top. Time can be set from 1 second to 9 hours 30 minutes: below 1 minute it is set second by second, between 1 and 10 minutes in 30-second steps, then in larger steps beyond that. The bonus time is set separately, and the letter B appears on the display whenever it is greater than zero. The instructions note that it can also be used for other two-player games, such as draughts, Scrabble or dominoes. It runs on one AA battery (LR6).
A set sized for beginners
The pieces have an 8.6 cm king and the board squares measure 5 cm: DGT places this king height among those suited to children and casual play. The pieces are lightly weighted, with a felt base.
Its limits
This is a classic, non-electronic set: it does not connect to a computer or an app, and the clock is not linked to a board. The clock’s instructions advise against use by children aged 0 to 3, due to small parts. Without a clock, DGT also offers the grey Starter Box, with the same 8.6 cm king pieces.
