Materials

An outdoor chess board must withstand the weather, UV rays and constant handling. Modern materials have come a long way:

High-density polyethylene (HDPE)

The most widely used material for giant chess sets. Resistant to UV, frost and knocks. Lightweight (the king weighs 2-4 kg depending on size), hollow inside and can be weighted with sand or water. Lasts 10-15 years outdoors.

Fibreglass (resin)

Heavier and sturdier than HDPE. A smooth, glossy finish gives a more upmarket look. Ideal for permanent installations in hotels and parks. King weight: 5-10 kg.

Treated wood

For a natural, authentic look. The wood must be pressure-treated and varnished to withstand damp conditions. Heavier and more fragile than plastic, but incomparably more beautiful. Best reserved for sheltered settings or dry climates.

The mat or board

The chess board itself can be a vinyl mat (affordable, portable), rubber tiles (comfortable, non-slip) or stone/concrete tiles (permanent, prestigious). Vinyl is the most common choice for schools.
