The secret of champions: preparation

At this level, raw talent alone is no longer enough. Preparation is a scientific process that combines several dimensions:

Theoretical preparation

Hundreds of hours spent on openings with teams of seconds. Every variation is analysed by engines, then tested in training games.

Physical preparation

Classical games last 5 to 6 hours. Optimal physical fitness is essential to maintain concentration. Kasparov was one of the first champions to build intensive sport into his routine.

Psychological preparation

Stress management, visualisation, mental routines. Some champions work with sports psychologists to optimise their performance.

Opponent-specific preparation

Studying each opponent’s recent games, identifying their weaknesses, preparing tailor-made “novelties” (theoretical innovations).

The champions who have left their mark on the Grand Prix

Among the best players in the world, several have shone in the Grand Prix:

Magnus Carlsen: serene dominance

Magnus Carlsen, world number one for more than a decade, has redefined the standards of preparation. His universal style — capable of winning in every type of position — and his legendary endurance make him the ultimate model of the modern player.

The new stars

A new generation of players (Firouzja, Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Abdusattorov) is shaking up the hierarchy. These prodigies, trained from childhood with the help of artificial intelligence, possess a dizzying depth of calculation.

♔ Did you know? Modern champions often use three different analysis engines (Stockfish, Leela, Dragon) to cross-check evaluations. When all three agree, the variation is considered reliable.

What makes a champion: the essential qualities

The 5 pillars of a chess champion: 1) Concrete calculation — seeing far ahead and with precision. 2) Positional intuition — sensing the right plan without calculating everything. 3) Time management — spending the minutes where they matter. 4) Psychological resilience — never cracking under pressure. 5) Daily preparation — talent without work is not enough.
