Isle of Lewis Chessmen: History of the Most Famous Medieval Chess Pieces

Discovered in 1831 on a beach in the Scottish Hebrides, the Isle of Lewis chess pieces are the most famous medieval chess pieces in the world. Known internationally as the Lewis Chessmen, these Lewis figures are displayed at the British Museum. The 1831 discovery

In 1831, a farmer named Malcolm MacLeod discovered a hidden treasure in an underground stone chamber on Uig beach, on the Isle of Lewis (Outer Hebrides, Scotland). The treasure contained 93 chess pieces carved from walrus ivory and whale tooth: 78 game pieces (kings, queens, bishops, knights, rooks), 14 pawns and 1 belt buckle.

The pieces were immediately recognised as exceptional. Their expressive faces, detailed postures and remarkable state of preservation make them a major archaeological discovery. Most of the pieces (82) were acquired by the British Museum in London, with the remaining 11 going to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, where they are on permanent display.

Who made the Lewis chessmen?

Historians believe the pieces were carved in Trondheim, Norway, between 1150 and 1200. At that time, the Hebrides were under Norwegian rule, and Trondheim was a major centre for ivory carving. The pieces were probably intended for a merchant who was transporting them to sell on Scottish or Irish markets.

The mystery: Why were the pieces buried? Several theories exist: the merchant’s shipwreck, with the pieces hidden before his death; buried pirate loot; or a votive offering. The mystery remains unsolved after almost 200 years of research.

What makes the Lewis chessmen so remarkable is the level of detail and expressiveness of the figures:

♔ The kings

Seated on a throne, sword resting on their knees, with a pensive gaze. Braided beards, ornate crown. The king’s expression of intense concentration evokes a monarch weighing a crucial decision, just as a player ponders their next move.

♕ The queens

Hand on cheek in a gesture of perplexity or concern. This is the most iconic image of the set. This unique posture has inspired countless reproductions and has become a universal symbol of strategic thought.

♗ The bishops

Depicted as mitred bishops holding a crosier. Rigid posture, fixed gaze. They reflect the influence of the Church in medieval Nordic society. In English, this piece is indeed called the “bishop”.

♖ The rooks (berserkers)

The rooks are not fortresses but berserkers, those Nordic warriors in a combat trance. They bite their shields in a fierce grimace, eyes bulging. The most spectacular and original piece of the set.
