From the Hans Niemann scandal to FIDE’s anti-cheating in chess measures, chess cheating has become a major issue in the digital age. How can it be detected. How does Chess.com detect cheaters? Through algorithms that compare your moves to the engine’s suggestions, in order to catch fraudsters and preserve the integrity of the game?
The evolution of chess cheating
Cheating in chess is as old as the game itself, but the computer age has radically changed the situation. When analysis engines exceed 3500 Elo — some 700 points above the world champion — the temptation to consult them discreetly during a game has become a systemic problem.
The history of chess shows that every technological innovation has brought its share of controversy, but nothing compares to the impact of smartphones and hidden earpieces.
The scandals that have shaken the chess world
Hans Niemann (2022)
Accused of cheating by Magnus Carlsen after their game at the Sinquefield Cup. Niemann admitted to having cheated online in the past. The affair divided the community and ended in a legal settlement.
Igors Rausis (2019)
Latvian grandmaster caught with a phone in the toilets during a tournament in France. Banned for life by FIDE. One of the rare cases of blatant, proven cheating in a classical tournament.
Borislav Ivanov (2013)
Bulgarian player whose performances matched engine moves 99.9% of the time. Refused to submit to checks. Banned from competition.
Massive online cheating
Chess.com has closed over 100,000 accounts for cheating, including several titled grandmasters. The problem is endemic in online play.
Cheating methods
| Method | Setting | Detection |
|---|---|---|
| Consulting an engine on a smartphone | In-hall tournament | Searches, metal detectors, surveillance |
| Hidden earpiece + accomplice | In-hall tournament | Frequency scanners, communication delay |
| Real-time assistance software | Online | Statistical move analysis, algorithmic anti-cheat |
| Coded signals with a spectator | In-hall tournament | Video surveillance, player isolation |
How to detect cheating
Statistical analysis
Anti-cheat software analyses the correlation between a player’s moves and those of the optimal engine. A human, even at the highest level, does not systematically play the best move. When a player shows a correlation rate above 90% over dozens of games, it’s a major red flag.
Key indicators of cheating: 1) Abnormally high engine correlation (> 85–90%). 2) Performance suddenly well above Elo rating. 3) Irregular thinking time (complex moves played quickly, simple moves with long thought). 4) Frequent trips to the toilets or out of the playing hall.
Preventive measures in tournaments
Official tournaments have strengthened their security measures:
Broadcast delay
Games are broadcast with a 15 to 30-minute delay to prevent accomplices from relaying live engine analysis.
Metal detectors
Systematic scans at the entrance to the playing hall. Phones are confiscated or placed in Yondr pouches.
Video surveillance
Cameras in the playing hall and corridors. Every exit is timed and monitored.
Fair Play Commission
FIDE has a dedicated commission that analyses suspicious games and can impose sanctions up to a lifetime ban.
Online cheating: an ongoing battle
Online chess sites invest heavily in algorithmic detection. Chess.com uses neural networks trained on millions of games to identify suspicious behaviour. Lichess has developed its own open-source system, Irwin, based on advanced statistical analysis.
Cheating is the worst thing that can happen to chess. This game relies entirely on intellectual integrity. To cheat is to deny its very essence.
