For Halloween, choose a chess set with a dark theme: skeletons, the undead, skulls or medieval knights. It’s played just like any other set, it decorates a table on the evening of 31 October, and it makes an original gift for a teenager or a fan of fantasy. Here is our selection, along with a few ideas for a spine-chilling chess evening.

The essentials
• The most spectacular: the Undead sets, with their hand-painted skeleton armies.
• The most classic: the Skull chess set on a black board, with an engraving option.
• The most historic: the Isle of Lewis pieces and their warriors biting their shields.
• For comfortable play: aim for squares of at least 4 cm for 8 cm kings.
• To receive the set in time: order by mid-October at the latest.
Why choose a themed chess set for Halloween?
A themed chess set is not a gimmick: the pieces follow the classic hierarchy (king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, pawn) and are recognisable at a glance. The difference lies in the decoration: instead of Staunton silhouettes, each side becomes an army with its own characters. For Halloween, it’s a chance to combine two pleasures: a genuine game and a table with real presence.
It also makes a popular autumn gift for teenagers and fantasy fans, who often discover chess this way. The painted resin pieces are lightweight, highly detailed and remain practical for everyday play.
Our selection of Halloween chess sets
1. The Undead Set II, on a black chess board
Two skeleton armies in resin, hand-sculpted and hand-painted, with highly detailed expressions. The black faux-leather chess board, 35 × 35 cm, hides a storage compartment beneath the board: handy for putting the pieces away after a game. King height 8 cm, squares of 3.5 cm: a compact format, ideal for a teenager’s bedroom or a desk.
2. The Undead Set III, on an antique world map
The same hand-painted skeletons, but on a faux-leather board decorated with an antique world map, with built-in storage. The result evokes an old pirate’s grimoire more than a horror film: perfect if you want a Halloween decoration that remains elegant for the rest of the year.
3. The Undead Set IV, on black maple
The most comfortable version to play on: a maple chess board stained black, 42 × 42 cm, with 4 cm squares that leave plenty of room for the figurines. The contrast between the dark board and the colours of the skeletons is striking, whether by candlelight or in broad daylight.
4. The Skull chess set, on black faux leather
An entirely hand-painted skeleton army, on a black faux-leather chess board, 40 × 40 cm, with 4.5 cm squares. With its 8 cm kings, this is a genuine classic-sized set, pleasant to handle. It can take an engraved plaque: a message, a date, and the set becomes a one-of-a-kind gift.
5. The Zombie chess set, for colour lovers
Two hordes of identical zombie characters, distinguished by their colours: blue and purple tones on one side, browns, greens and oranges on the other. These pieces are sold on their own: pair them with one of our chess boards with 4 to 4.5 cm squares, preferably dark, to make the colours stand out.
6. The Skeleton Bust Set, on walnut and maple
Painted resin skeleton busts set on a classic walnut and maple chess board, 37 × 37 cm, with storage compartments. This is the most successful pairing of the macabre with fine furniture: a traditional wooden board, pieces that certainly won’t go unnoticed.
7. The Templars Set, for a medieval atmosphere
For those who prefer knights to ghosts: hand-painted resin Templars, in white and red, on a walnut and maple chess board, 40 × 40 cm, with 4.5 cm squares. King height 8.3 cm, engraving option available. To take the theme further, the sculpted resin Templar chess board, adorned with the cross pattée, extends the atmosphere.
8. The Isle of Lewis Set, the most mysterious
The original pieces, carved in the 12th century from walrus ivory and whale teeth, were discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis, in Scotland. Their solemn faces and their berserker warriors biting their shields have fascinated people for nearly two centuries. This set faithfully reproduces the models held at the British Museum and the National Museum of Scotland, on a mahogany chess board, 40 × 40 cm. Their story is told in our article on Isle of Lewis chess pieces.

Organising a special Halloween chess evening
A themed set deserves an evening to match. A few simple ideas for 31 October:
- Dim lighting: a few candles around the table are enough. Keep them well clear of the board: wax and heat are no friends to either resin or wood.
- A “sudden death” tournament: the name fits perfectly. Each player has a fixed amount of time for the whole game, with no increment: once the clock runs out, the game is lost. All the rules are in our guide to blitz chess.
- A game of Chess960: the pieces on the back rank are shuffled at the start of the game, following a few simple rules. Ideal for unsettling players who know their openings by heart: see our article on Chess960.
- A trap for beginner guests: teach them Scholar’s mate, a mate in four moves, then how to defend against it.
- A film to end the evening: pick one from our selection of the best chess films.
Choosing and caring for a painted resin chess set
Size first. As with any chess set, each square should measure at least the base diameter of the king plus a quarter. Themed figurines are wider than Staunton pieces: squares of 4 to 4.5 cm offer more comfort for 8 cm kings. Our guide to chess board sizes sets out all the correspondences.
Care next. Dust the pieces with a soft brush or a dry cloth, without water or household cleaning products. Avoid direct sunlight, which fades the colours, and avoid drops: the finer details (swords, crowns, skeleton fingers) are the most fragile. Store the pieces separately from one another, ideally in the board’s storage compartment where there is one.
Frequently asked questions
Which chess set should you give for Halloween?
A chess set with a dark theme: skeletons, the undead or skulls for the full Halloween effect, Templar knights or Isle of Lewis pieces for a more understated medieval atmosphere. Choose a complete set with a chess board if the person doesn’t already have one.
Can you really play with a themed chess set?
Yes. The pieces follow the classic hierarchy and are easy to recognise. With kings from 7 to 8.3 cm and squares from 3.5 to 4.5 cm, the sets in this selection are perfectly suited to games at home. In clubs and competitions, however, Staunton pieces are used.
Are resin pieces sturdy?
Resin holds up well to normal use, but fine details can break if dropped. Handle the pieces by the body rather than by any protruding elements, and store them separately.
Can a themed chess set be personalised?
Certain models, such as the Skull chess set or the Templars Set, can take an engraved plaque. Find all compatible models in our personalised engraving selection.
