The Classic is a variant of the Staunton model in which the black pieces are made of black-stained wood. Set against the white pieces, this deep black gives a clear contrast, which DGT highlights as a way to read the board more quickly. The knight is sturdy, the silhouettes are crisp, and each piece is recognisable without a second glance. DGT designs it for everyday games, for the player who wants an understated, handsome chess set.
Shaped by hand in wood and fitted with felt underneath, these pieces are made for DGT electronic chess boards. Placed on one of them, they let the board follow the game square by square: you can record your games, broadcast them live, or take on opponents online with real pieces beneath your fingers, without entering moves by mouse.
You are looking at the non-weighted version, which weighs 725 g for the whole set. DGT also makes the Classic with added weight, available on another page of the shop: that set then weighs 960 g, with the same design and the same 9.5 cm king. Choose this one if you like moving light pieces, or the other if you want to feel more weight in hand.
No board is included with this set. Until it is placed on a DGT e-Board or Smart Board, it records nothing and allows neither broadcasting nor online play. If you don't yet have a DGT electronic chess board, add one to your basket: a USB or Bluetooth e-Board for home use, or a tournament e-Board or Smart Board for a club. The Pegasus and the Centaur, meanwhile, come with their own dedicated pieces.

DGT presents it on walnut, wenge and rosewood e-Boards, without favouring any one of them. The choice is down to your taste.
Only the weight: 725 g for this set, 960 g for the weighted version (DGT 27006). The design, the 9.5 cm king and the compatible boards are the same.
For promotion: with two queens per colour, a promoted pawn can be replaced by a real queen on the board, without resorting to a makeshift piece.

A beautiful chess set rests on a simple balance: pieces well proportioned to the size of the squares. To choose a harmonious board, the most reliable guide is the diameter of the king's base.

A board that is too small can hamper moves and make the set look cluttered. Conversely, a board that is too large can break the harmony of the whole. The right size brings both playing comfort and elegance.

I'm not a big fan of buying this kind of product online, I like to see it before buying. But honestly nowadays it's become almost impossible to find a nice traditional chess set in shops. So I ordered a wooden model online and I'm really pleased with my purchase. The set is very pretty, the pieces are beautiful and it looks great in the living room. We play regularly with my husband and the rest of the time it's almost like decoration. The only small complaint I could make is that there isn't a huge choice of storage boxes when you have pieces that aren't Staunton. Otherwise nothing to say, very satisfied.
