Staunton-style electronic chess pieces by DGT, handcrafted in rosewood, with a finely carved knight. For use on a DGT electronic chess board, sold separately.
Also available: DGT Royal Weighted Electronic Chess Pieces in Rosewood
The Royal follows the traditional Staunton style. DGT crafts it by hand in rosewood, with warm brown tones, and each piece is fitted with a felt base. The finely carved knight is the set's signature piece: DGT sees it as a mark of the craftsmanship put into every set. The brand states that the pieces are made to tournament standards.
DGT pairs this set with the walnut and rosewood e-Boards. On the rosewood e-Board's page, the brand cites the Royal as an example of pieces with warm red tones that match this board. The Royal also works on the wenge e-Board, the Smart Board and the tournament e-Boards. Once placed on one of these boards, every move played is recognised: you can record your games, broadcast them live, or play online while holding real pieces in your hand.
This set is the unweighted version, weighing 760g. DGT offers the same model weighted, at 1kg, on another listing in the shop. The design, king height and compatible boards remain the same; only the feel in hand differs.
These pieces don't work on their own: without a DGT e-Board or Smart Board, they transmit no moves. If you don't yet have a DGT board, add one to your order. The Pegasus and the Centaur have their own pieces, supplied with them.
Yes. The DGT board recognises the pieces and transmits the moves; it is sold separately: USB, Bluetooth or tournament e-Board, or Smart Board.
DGT recommends walnut or rosewood, whose tones match the Royal's warm brown shades. The set also works on the wenge, the Smart Board and the tournament e-Boards.
The weight: 760g for this set, 1kg for the weighted version (DGT 27004). The design and king height are identical.
Yes. DGT states that the Royal pieces are made to tournament standards, and they work on the tournament e-Boards.

A beautiful chess set rests on a simple balance: pieces well proportioned to the size of the squares. To choose a harmonious board, the most reliable guide is the diameter of the king's base.
Key guideline: ideally, the king's base takes up about 75% of the square.
| King height | King base diameter | Square size |
|---|---|---|
| 7,3 to 7,6 cm | 3,8 cm | 4,7 to 5,1 cm |
| 9,5 to 9,8 cm | 4,4 cm | 5,7 to 6 cm |
| 10,1 cm | 4,1 to 4,7 cm | 6 cm |
| 11,2 cm | 5 cm | 6,3 cm |
| 12,7 cm and above | 4,4 cm | 6,3 to 7 cm |
| King base diameter | Square size |
|---|---|
| 2 to 2,4 cm | 2,8 to 3,5 cm |
| 2,5 to 2,9 cm | 3,5 to 4 cm |
| 3 to 3,4 cm | 4,3 to 5 cm |
| 3,5 to 3,9 cm | 4,8 to 6,2 cm |
| 4 to 4,5 cm | 6 to 8 cm |
A board that is too small can hamper moves and make the set look cluttered. Conversely, a board that is too large can break the harmony of the whole. The right size brings both playing comfort and elegance.

I'm not a big fan of buying this kind of product online, I like to see it before buying. But honestly nowadays it's become almost impossible to find a nice traditional chess set in shops. So I ordered a wooden model online and I'm really pleased with my purchase. The set is very pretty, the pieces are beautiful and it looks great in the living room. We play regularly with my husband and the rest of the time it's almost like decoration. The only small complaint I could make is that there isn't a huge choice of storage boxes when you have pieces that aren't Staunton. Otherwise nothing to say, very satisfied.
Product matches the photo, no nasty surprises, well protected and sent on time. Thank you.
Merci.
I ordered a complete chess set and unfortunately the black king arrived broken, despite the parcel being very well packaged. I sent an email to customer service with a photo of the broken piece. They replied quickly and sent me a new king free of charge. The new piece arrived a few days later, very well protected and this time no issues at all. It can happen that a piece breaks during transport, even when well packaged. What matters most is the seller's reaction when there's a problem. And honestly, nothing to fault, it was simple and quick. Very satisfied with the after-sales service from Le Palais des Échecs.
Lots (too many... ? ^-'^) of models, I had a hard time making my choice but by contacting them by email I got several personalised suggestions that really helped a lot. So overall a positive review of the service from Le Palais des Echecs. One small downside, a payment in instalments option would be welcome. Kind regards.
✓ Avis VérifiésBeaucoup (trop... ? Bien cordialement.

I ordered a very large folding chess set on the gladiator theme in mid-August, the figures are well made and what's handy is that you can store them inside the board which folds up.
