What the weighting brings
This set is the Royal in its heaviest version: 1 kg for the complete set of pieces, compared with 760 g unweighted. The design and size remain the same – the king still stands 9.5 cm tall. The difference is felt when you pick up a piece and when you set it down: it feels heavier in the hand. Both versions work on the same DGT boards, so the choice comes down to your preference for feel, not compatibility.
The Royal, in terms of design
DGT crafts these pieces by hand in rosewood, with warm brown tones, following the classic Staunton style. The finely carved knight is the detail DGT highlights most. Each piece stands on a felt base, and DGT states that they are made to tournament standards.
Which e-Board to use
DGT pairs the Royal with its walnut and rosewood e-Boards; on the rosewood e-Board page, the brand mentions it for its warm red highlights. The set also works on the wenge board, the Smart Board and the tournament e-Boards. Placed on one of these boards, the pieces are recognised square by square: your games are recorded, broadcast live, and you can play online without leaving the board.
Before you order
This set is sold without a board. Without a DGT e-Board or Smart Board, it cannot transmit any moves. The Pegasus and the Centaur come with their own pieces. If you prefer lighter pieces, the unweighted version of the Royal has its own product page.
