What the weighting changes
This set is the weighted version of the Ebony set: the complete set weighs 985 g, compared with 730 g for the unweighted version. The woods, the design and the 9.8 cm king are those of the Ebony set. The difference is felt when you pick up a piece and set it down: it is heavier in the hand. Both versions work on the same DGT boards, so the choice is simply a matter of preference.
Two fine woods, shaped by hand
The black pieces are made of ebony, giving them a true black finish; the white pieces are in boxwood, with a pale colour. DGT states that these pieces are shaped by hand with great care, fitted with felt underneath so they glide without damaging the board, and presents this set as the most luxurious of its electronic sets. The brand recommends it to lovers of fine chess sets and to collectors.
Wenge, the preferred board
DGT writes that this dark-toned set complements its wenge chess board, and features the Ebony set on the page for the USB e-Board in wenge. Nothing obliges you to choose it, however: walnut, rosewood, tournament boards and the Smart Board all recognise it just as well. It can then be used to record and broadcast your games, or to play online on a real chess board.
Before you buy
No board is included, and without a DGT board the pieces cannot transmit anything. The Pegasus and the Centaur are sold with their own pieces. For a lighter set, the unweighted version of the Ebony set is available on its own product page.
