DGT’s Royal set in wood, without electronics: a hand-carved knight and tournament-size weighted pieces. Sold without a chess board.
The Royal is recognised by its hand-carved, highly detailed knight: DGT designed all the other pieces to match it. The pieces are handmade, from quality wood, with a careful finish.
The pieces are tournament size, with a 9.5 cm king, and they are weighted: the set weighs 1.19 kg. DGT sees these as pieces that move with clarity and precision. As with all DGT sets, a second queen is supplied in each colour, so you can play a promotion without an improvised piece. The set arrives in a DGT gift box.
This set follows the design of DGT's Royal electronic pieces. The manufacturer intends it in particular for tournaments playing with these electronic pieces: tables without an electronic chess board thus keep the same set as the others. It suits home play just as well.
You receive the pieces alone, without a chess board. They are not electronic: if you play on a DGT e-Board or Smart Board and want your moves recorded, choose the Royal electronic pieces, sold on other listings in the shop in a standard, weighted version, as DGT pairs its electronic chess boards with its electronic pieces.
No. They follow the design of the Royal electronic pieces, but without electronics. For a DGT e-Board or Smart Board, DGT offers its electronic pieces, sold on another listing.
No. You receive the pieces in their gift box, without a board. DGT presents them as tournament size, with a 9.5 cm king.
1.19 kg according to DGT. The pieces are weighted.
DGT supplies a second queen in each colour, as in all its sets, for promotions.

A beautiful chess set rests on a simple balance: pieces well proportioned to the size of the squares. To choose a harmonious board, the most reliable guide is the diameter of the king's base.
Key guideline: ideally, the king's base takes up about 75% of the square.
| King height | King base diameter | Square size |
|---|---|---|
| 7,3 to 7,6 cm | 3,8 cm | 4,7 to 5,1 cm |
| 9,5 to 9,8 cm | 4,4 cm | 5,7 to 6 cm |
| 10,1 cm | 4,1 to 4,7 cm | 6 cm |
| 11,2 cm | 5 cm | 6,3 cm |
| 12,7 cm and above | 4,4 cm | 6,3 to 7 cm |
| King base diameter | Square size |
|---|---|
| 2 to 2,4 cm | 2,8 to 3,5 cm |
| 2,5 to 2,9 cm | 3,5 to 4 cm |
| 3 to 3,4 cm | 4,3 to 5 cm |
| 3,5 to 3,9 cm | 4,8 to 6,2 cm |
| 4 to 4,5 cm | 6 to 8 cm |
A board that is too small can hamper moves and make the set look cluttered. Conversely, a board that is too large can break the harmony of the whole. The right size brings both playing comfort and elegance.

I'm not a big fan of buying this kind of product online, I like to see it before buying. But honestly nowadays it's become almost impossible to find a nice traditional chess set in shops. So I ordered a wooden model online and I'm really pleased with my purchase. The set is very pretty, the pieces are beautiful and it looks great in the living room. We play regularly with my husband and the rest of the time it's almost like decoration. The only small complaint I could make is that there isn't a huge choice of storage boxes when you have pieces that aren't Staunton. Otherwise nothing to say, very satisfied.
Product matches the photo, no nasty surprises, well protected and sent on time. Thank you.
Merci.
I ordered a complete chess set and unfortunately the black king arrived broken, despite the parcel being very well packaged. I sent an email to customer service with a photo of the broken piece. They replied quickly and sent me a new king free of charge. The new piece arrived a few days later, very well protected and this time no issues at all. It can happen that a piece breaks during transport, even when well packaged. What matters most is the seller's reaction when there's a problem. And honestly, nothing to fault, it was simple and quick. Very satisfied with the after-sales service from Le Palais des Échecs.
Lots (too many... ? ^-'^) of models, I had a hard time making my choice but by contacting them by email I got several personalised suggestions that really helped a lot. So overall a positive review of the service from Le Palais des Echecs. One small downside, a payment in instalments option would be welcome. Kind regards.
✓ Avis VérifiésBeaucoup (trop... ? Bien cordialement.

I ordered a very large folding chess set on the gladiator theme in mid-August, the figures are well made and what's handy is that you can store them inside the board which folds up.
