Magnus Carlsen, born on 30 November 1990 in Tønsberg, Norway, is regarded by many as the greatest chess player of all time. Nicknamed the king of chess, world champion from 2013 to 2023 and holder of the all-time record Elo rating of 2882, he has revolutionised modern chess through his universality and his ability to win positions that everyone else judges to be drawn.

An early prodigy

Magnus learned chess at the age of 5, taught by his father Henrik. At 13 years and 148 days old, he earned the title of International Grandmaster, becoming one of the youngest GMs in history. By 2010, he had reached the number one spot in the FIDE world rankings at just 19 years old. His meteoric rise was fuelled by a phenomenal memory and an exceptional capacity for work.

The champion’s reign (2013–2023)

In November 2013, Carlsen defeated Viswanathan Anand in Chennai for the world title, with a score of 6.5–3.5. He went on to successfully defend his title against Anand (2014), Sergey Karjakin (2016), Fabiano Caruana (2018) and Ian Nepomniachtchi (2021). In 2023, he decided not to defend his title, feeling he lacked the motivation for another championship match.
